When did the US suspend the $800 de minimis exemption?

In two waves: China and Hong Kong lost duty-free treatment on May 2, 2025 (90 FR 14899), and all other countries followed on August 29, 2025 under Executive Order 14324 (90 FR 37775). CBP interim final rules published June 24, 2026 made the suspension indefinite across all transport modes.

What happens on October 22, 2026?

That is the compliance date CBP set for the new postal informal-entry process in 91 FR 37801. From that date postal operators must follow the revised 19 CFR 145 procedures when clearing low-value mail shipments that no longer qualify for duty-free treatment.

Is de minimis coming back?

No path back is on the table: the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Public Law 119-21) statutorily repeals the de minimis exemption for all shipments effective July 1, 2027, removing the "$800 in any other case" clause from 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C).
